Tassels are a great way to decorate your crochet makes: blankets, pillows, curtains, but can be decorative on their own: think of a door key with a rich red tassel, a Christmas tree ornament, or a tassel garland maybe?
They can help use up your stash: just combine all the leftovers for a colorful set of tassels.
And the good news is that you don’t need any special tools to make a tassel, just scissors and something everyone has handy, like a cell phone or a small book.
Have a look at my way of making tassels and start your own today!
- Take a book (a cell phone or a piece of cardboard should work fine as well) and place a piece of yarn in the middle of it, lengthwise. Remember: the width of the book determines the length of your finished tassel.

2. Next, wind up yarn around the book 45 times (or less, if you want the tassel to be thinner, or more, if you want it to be more thick), perpendicular to the initial piece of yarn.

3. Tie the initial piece of yarn tight.

4. Slide the whole thing off the book, cut the entire strand on the opposite side to where it was tied.
5. Tie the tassel with another piece of yarn about 1 cm/0,5” below the first knot.

Attach the tassel where needed with the strands of the initial piece of yarn. Hide the remaining ends inside the tassel. Use hair brush to brush the tassels. Trim to even length.
