US D-3 (3 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain the right tension
Yarn: Tropical Lane Brasil 2 (100% cotton, DK, 170m/185 yd in 100g/3.5oz): small amount of yarn in 3 colors:

yarn A: green 616

yarn B: yellow 263

yarn C: turquoise

scissors
tapestry needle

Gauge

1 square measures 10x10cm/4×4”

Abbreviations (US terms)

beg – beginning

ch – chain

ch-sp – chain space

dc – double crochet

dc2tog – (yo, insert hook in st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) twice in same st, yo, draw through 3 loops on hook

dc3tog – (yo, insert hook in st, yo, draw up a loop, yo, draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times in same st, yo, draw through 4 loops on hook

hdc – half double crochet

rep – repeat

RS – right side

sc – single crochet

Square is worked in rounds.
Ch1 at the beginning of round does not count as st throughout.

PATTERN

With yarn A, ch4, sl st in first ch to close the loop.

Round 1: Ch1, 12sc in loop, sl st in beg st. (12 sts)

Round 2: Ch1, sc in each st, sl st in beg st, fasten off yarn A. (12 sts)

Join yarn B in any st of Round 2.

Round 3: (Ch2, dc2tog) in st, ch3, (dc3tog in next st, ch3) 11 times, sl st in beg st, fasten off yarn B. (12 sts, 12 ch-3 sp)

Join yarn C in any ch-sp.

Round 4: Ch1, 3sc in ch-3 sp, *(2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in next ch-3 sp, (3sc in next ch-3 sp) twice, rep from * two more times, (2hdc, ch1, 2hdc) in next ch-3 sp, 3sc in next ch-3 sp, sl st in beg st, turn. (40 sts, 4 ch-sps)

Round 5: Ch1, *sc in each st to ch-1 sp, (hdc, ch1, hdc) in ch-sp, rep from * around to end, sl st to beg st, turn. (48 sts, 4 ch-sps)
