Classic Woolen Scarf: Free Crochet Pattern

If you’re looking for an easy, classic, neutral, basic crochet scarf, this pattern has it all.

But what’s important too, is that you can easily customize it and add special features to make it absolutely unique and stand out in a crowd! How? Read until the end.

It was meant to match my another basic, simple pattern: Fisherman Beanie and uses the same stitch (half double crochet in back loop only), but is even easier, as there are no slip stitches and no sewing.

woolen scarf

In my opinion this is a great pattern for beginners, but looks good and really classy. Elegance comes from simplicity.

Pattern is written in 3 sizes for the yarn given, but you can as well forget about all the numbers and use any yarn you wish – just read the notes below.

This scarf is gender neutral, a perfect fall/winter gift for big and small. Add a Fisherman Beanie and you have a winter set for all your friends and relations.

Notes
● Pattern is written in 3 sizes S (M, L) – sample shown is size M
● Scarf is crocheted in rows, using hdc st, worked in back loop only.
● Turning chains DO NOT count as stitch.
● REMEMBER: You can use ANY yarn, forgetting about the pattern numbers, just adjusting the length and width to your liking. Keep in mind, that number of foundation chains determines the length, number of rows determines the width of your scarf.

PATTERN
Ch 217 (264, 302)
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in each ch across. Turn. (215, 262, 300 sts)
Row 2: Ch2 (do not count as st), hdc blo across. Turn. (215, 262, 300 sts)
Rows 3-18 (3-21, 3-27): Rep Row 2.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.

If you like the minimalist BASIC VERSION, you’re done. However, find below a few ideas on how to customize your scarf:

  1. Add fringe, by attaching two strands of yarn to each row end on
both short sides of the scarf.
  2. Using any yarn and pom pom maker, make 4 pom poms and attach to 4 corners of the scarf.
  3. Using any yarn of your choice, make 4 tassels and attach to 4 corners of the scarf.
  4. Make 6 tassels and attach 3 to each end of the scarf.

If you make Fisherman Beanie to match the scarf, consider customizing it the same way: by adding pom pom or tassel on top.
