-US D-3 (3 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain the right tension
- Yarn: Drops Safran (100% cotton, 5 ply/sport, 1 skein has 160 m/175 yds in 50 g/1.8 oz)
BLACK AND WHITE HAT: black (16), white (17): one skein each
MULTICOLORED HAT: one skein of white (17) and small amounts of each: lemon (62), apple green (31), turquoise (30), orange (28), light brown (22)

Notes
Hat is made up of pentagon and hexagon motifs crocheted in rounds, and half hexagon motifs, crocheted in rows.
Pattern is written in four sizes. Motifs for various sizes have different stitches over the same number of rounds.
Ch1 and ch2 at the beginning of round/row do not count as st.
PATTERN
PENTAGONS (make 6)
For the Black and White Hat use black on all pentagons. For the Multicolored Hat use any color except white.
Using black, ch3.
Round 1: 15dc in third ch from hook, sl st to top of beg dc. (15 sts)
Round 2: Ch2, *(dc, tr, dc), 2dc in next st, dc in next st, rep from * 4 more times, sl st to beg st. (30 sts)
Fasten off size 1 only.
Size 2 only: Round 3: Ch1, sc, *(sc, hdc, sc) in next st, sc in next 5 sts, rep from * 3 more times, (sc, hdc, sc) in next, sc in final 4 sts, sl st to beg st. (40 sts). Fasten off.
Size 3 only: Round 3: Ch2, hdc, *(hdc, dc, hdc) in next st, hdc in next 5 sts, rep from * 3 more times, (hdc, dc, hdc) in next, hdc in final 4 sts, sl st to beg st. (40 sts). Fasten off.

TO MAKE UP
Arrange the motifs as shown on picture. Using white, join all motifs together, working sl st with WS facing. Start from the hexagon in the middle and one by one join all surrounding pentagons. White half hexagons are added in last round between black/multicolor hexagons.
LOWER EDGING
For the Black and White Hat use black. For the Multicolored Hat use white. Sc evenly around lower edge.
Fasten off. Weave in all ends.
