March is here, spring is just around the corner and St. Patrick’s Day is coming!
I suggest adding some green to your favorite granny square compositions. Have a look at my free Shamrock Granny Square pattern and think how cool that would be to make a blanket (a bag? a coaster? a bunting? a sweater) with this happy green motif?

-US D-3 (3 mm) crochet hook
-Yarn: Stylecraft Yarns Naturals Organic Cotton (100% cotton, 50g/1.8oz, 105m/115yds): small amounts (approx. 10g) in two colors. For yarn substitution see: yarnsub.com.

Abbreviations (in US terms)
bl – back loop
beg – beginning
ch – chain
ch-sp – chain space
fl – first loop
hdc – half double crochet
rep – repeat
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st(s) – stitch(es)
Notes
Square is worked in rounds. The leaflets are worked onto the square at the end – in rows. Ch1 does not count as a st at the beg of round/row.
PATTERN
Using yarn B, ch4. Sl st to first ch to form a ring.
Round 1: Ch1 (does not count as st throughout), 8sc in ring, sl st to first st. (8 sts)
Round 2: Ch1, 2sc in each st around, sl st to first st. (16 sts)
Round 3: Ch1, *sc in first st, 2sc in next st, rep from * 7 times more, sl st to first st. (24 sts)
Fasten off.

Join yarn A in bl of any st of Round 3.
Round 4: Work in bl throughout round. Ch1 (doesn’t count as st throughout), sc in 2 sts, *(hdc, ch2, hdc) in next st, sc in 5 sts, rep from * 3 times more, working 3 sc on last rep, sl st to beg st, turn. (28 sts, 4 ch-2 sps)
Round 5: Ch1, sc in 4 sts, *(hdc, ch2, hdc) in ch-2 sp, sc in 7 sts, rep from * 3 times more, working 3 sc on last rep, sl st to beg st, turn. (36 sts, 4 ch-2 sps)
Round 6: Ch1, sc in 4 sts, *(hdc, ch2, hdc) in ch-2 sp, sc in 9 sts, rep from * 3 times more, working 5 sc on last rep, sl st to beg st, turn. (44sts, 4 ch-2 sps)
Round 7: Ch1, sc in 6 sts, *(hdc, ch2, hdc) in ch-2 sp, sc in 11 sts, rep from * 3 times more, working 5 sc on last rep, sl st to beg st, turn. (52 sts, 4 ch-2 sp)
Round 8: Ch1, sc in 6 sts, *(hdc, ch2, hdc) in ch-2 sp, sc in 13 sts, rep from * 3 times more, working 7 sc on last rep, sl st to beg st, turn. (60 sts, 4 ch-2 sp)
Round 9: Ch1, sc in 8 sts, *(hdc, ch2, hdc) in ch-2 sp, sc in 15 sts, rep from * 3 times more, working 7 sc on last rep, sl st to beg st, turn. (68 sts, 4 ch-2 sp)
Round 10: Ch1, sc in 8 sts, *(hdc, ch2, hdc) in ch-2 sp, sc in 17 sts, rep from * 3 times more, working 9 sc on last rep, sl st to beg st, turn. (76 sts, 4 ch-2 sp)
Fasten off.

Join yarn B in any fl of Round 3.
Row 1: Work in fl throughout row. 2sc in st, sc in next 6 sts, 2sc in next st, turn. (10 sts)
Row 2: Ch1, 2sc in st, sc in next 8 sts, 2sc in next st, turn. (12 sts)
Row 3: Ch1, sc across, turn. (12 sts)
Row 4: Ch1, skip 2 sts, 5hdc in next st, skip 2 sts, sl st in next st, skip 2 sts, 5hdc in next st, skip 2 sts, sl st in last st.
Fasten off.

Make two more leaflets starting in the next unworked fl from Round 3 after first leaflet. Fasten off. Weave in ends.
