Ch4, sl st in first ch to close ring.
Round 1 (RS): Ch2, 8dc into ring, sl st to top of beg st. (8 sts)
Round 2: Ch2, 2fpdc around each st around, sl st on top of beg st. (16 sts)
Round 3: Ch2, (fpdc around st, 2fpdc around next st) 8 times, sl st on top of beg st. (24 sts)
Round 4: Ch2, (fpdc around 2 sts, 2fpdc around next st) 8 times, sl st on top of beg st. (32 sts)
Round 5: Ch2, (fpdc around 3 sts, 2fpdc around next st) 8 times, sl st on top of beg st. (40 sts)
SIZES 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 only:

SIZES 7, 8 only:
Round 11: Ch2, (fpdc around 9 sts, 2fpdc around next st) 8 times, sl st on top of beg st. (88 sts)
SIZE 8 only:
Round 12: Ch2, (fpdc around 10 sts, 2fpdc around next st) 8 times, sl st on top of beg st. (96 sts)
ALL SIZES
Round 6 (7, 8, 9) (10, 11, 12, 13): Ch2, fpdc around each st, sl st on top of beg st. (40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96 sts)
Repeat last round 7 (8, 10, 11) (13, 14, 16, 17) more times.
There should be 13 (15, 18, 20) (23, 25, 28, 30) rounds completed.
If you want to make the beanie longer, continue repeating last round until required length. Then move on to Final Round.
Final Round: Ch1, sc in each st around. Sl st on top of beg st. (40, 48, 56, 64, 72, 80, 88, 96 sts)
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
For striped/color block version, change yarn on the WS, carry the unused color up the WS of your work to use again on the next round in that color. This will reduce the number of ends you need to weave in at the end.
Have a look at some variations of the pattern (and think of your own!)
- Use two colors and change color in every round for thin stripes, or add just a few at the bottom.
- How about a color block beanie?
- Use up scrap yarn and make multi-colored striped version – with regular or irregular intervals.
- Adding more rows will result in a slouchy beanie.
