I like crocheting on purpose, making practical things that you can acually use, not only look at them.
Recently I noticed that when I sit in my armchair with my current WIP and a cup of tea, I put the cup on my precious palisander chest. I realised that I need a coaster BADLY (even if I never used it before!), just to protect the beautiful wooden surface of the furniture!
I thought of my stash and reminded myself of a few balls of Katia Big Ribbon, which is kind of a t-shirt yarn (I used it before to make my British Isles Rug). I tried to make a shamrock coaster with it, but it was too small.
So I took a bigger hook and worked with two strands of this chunky yarn. The coaster is now big enough to serve my cups (and my wooden furniture, too)!
It is an easy and super quick crochet make. For you or as last minute gift for a friend. Apart from serving as a coaster, use it anyhow to decorate your place. Here we go.

Supplies:
-US P/Q (15 mm) crochet hook
-Yarn: Katia Big Ribbon (each ball weights 200 g/7 oz. and has 72 m/77 yds.), olive green 20: 2 balls.
(Notice: for one coaster you will need about 40g of the yarn. Hence, when you work with two balls, you can make 10 coasters out of them, but just one ball will be enough if you just want to try. Only remember: you will have to divide the one ball into smaller portions to work with two strands at a time.)

Abbreviations (in US terms)
ch – chain
hdc – half double crochet
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch
st/s – stitch/es
tr – treble crochet
rep – repeat

PATTERN
Work with two strands of yarn held together.
Ch4, sl st in first ch to form the ring.
Work following stitches (ch4, tr, hdc, tr, ch4, sl st) into the ring.
Repeat 2 more times.
Ch5, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and in next 3 sts.
Sl st into ring. Fasten off.
Using big tapestry needle hide all yarn ends.
